The Importance of SEO in the Hospitality Industry

Welcome back my fellow hospitality friends. This week we are giving you a snapshot on Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). First click here for a short HELLO MESSAGE FROM MARK.

What is SEO?

SEO is used by any business with an online presence and the aim is to organically improve visibility on the internet, increase brand awareness and often enhances customer interactivity. The application of SEO actions are an integral part to a hotel’s online presence and rankings on search engines like google and yahoo. When a particular audience searches your hotel, they get a list of results from the search engine.

Why do we need use SEO?

In most instances, a web user’s immediate action would be to click the website that is ranked first when they have entered a search query. If your website is not visible on the first page then the likelihood of your customers clicking on this is very slim and will lose potential direct bookings to your website.

How do we use SEO?

The application of SEO can be very complicated but here are two key principles that will ensure your web pages are SEO friendly and will support improved rankings for searches:

Don’t be static: You need to have more than just a landing page with static content. Continually evolving and updating your content, reinforcing and repeating your ‘key words’ across all activities of your pages and encouraging regular/ repeat traffic that will support improved rankings. This can be achieved by including regularly updated blogs, videos and support resources with tagged/ keyword rich text and media to ensure your site stays fresh and relevant.

Utilise Tags: Applying what is called a ‘title tag’ for each page (i.e., HTML codes/keywords or phrases describing what each page is about) and using ‘meta descriptions that are relevant and targeted to your hotel's unique offering (hotel name, location & features i.e. Airport, Swimming Pool, Family-Friendly, etc). This principle applies to images (as well as text) which must also be labeled and formatted.

  1. Mark, great blog post this week! I love your video at the beginning. I wonder could it be embedded rather than a link to another site? But really this is a great idea and very personal. It is inspiring and I must follow suite and try it. Overall, it is a simplified version of what SEO is and is perfect for a small business trying to understand. I like the link back to the other blogs and to contact us. For your tags to get the right keyword you can use tools like Google trends which is free or Moz keyword explorer which is a paid service to help you discover the best keywords to use for your tags. Well done this week Mark.

  4. Mark, I love your video at the beginning and you always make your blogs so welcoming and easy to read. You very much simplify the explanation of SEO and cover it very well by using the what, how, and why approach. Content is king for sure and it is vital that the website content is updated on a regular basis so when google bots are crawling they rank your website at the top of the SERP. There are many areas that a business can improve on their organic SEO and you have summarised this very well.
